Pallets Design Configuration and its uses

While there had been many blog written on pallets, this one aims to talks about the different pallet design configuration which will help in picking the one that fits you right.

To begin with pallet is basically a portable rigid platform that is horizontal in shape, and something that is used to store, stack, transport or assemble goods. They are not mere pieces of wood that are nailed together rather play a crucial role when it comes to logistics and packaging. The pallets have been instrumental in boosting up the efficiency of your warehouses as they let stacked goods to be manoeuvred easily. There are many different ways by which the pallets can be configured to get the warehouse up and running efficiently.

A brief of the pallet design configuration

The best part to know is that the pallets can be expandable and reusable. They can be configured in one of the following ways:

  • Plastic
  • Wood
  • Metals
  • Combination of wood, plastics, or metals

Pallets come in different styles and in different measurements. They could be reversible, stackable and much more! The standard size of a pallet is always determined by the ISO and is unique in various countries. While in North America they are basically 1219mm × 1016mm, in Europe & Asia they are 1000mm × 1200mm and 1165mm × 1165mm in Australia. The story is totally different in North America with pallets measuring 1067mm × 1067mm.

Pallet types based on the configuration

Pallets are configured in different shapes and sizes. They come either with their top layer, referred to as the top deck, and a bottom layer, which is referred to as bottom deck. Now these two decks gets spaced out by boards or solid blocks called as stringers. Below there are 5 types of pallet configurations that are explained for you.

Different style configuration of the pallets

1.Block Pallets

2.Stringer Pallets

3.Double-Face Pallet

4.Solid Deck Pallet

5. Presswood Pallets

6. Plywood Pallets

7. Metal Pallets

8. Plastic Pallets

9. Corrugated Board Pallets

10. Double wing pallets

1.Block Pallets

Block pallets are configured in an unique way with their 4 way entry. This makes them easily accessible by forklifts on all four sides. Such block pallets can be made of wood, plywood or by plastic. In order to stabilize the deck boards on top, they are comprised of 4 – 12 wooden posts. The block pallet design can either have bottom boards or not and have parallel and perpendicular stringers to double the handling efficiency.

2.Stringer Pallets

Stringer pallets have two different configurations. They can be,

-          Two-way stringer pallets

-          Four-way stringer pallets

While the two-way stringer pallets have its boards running in the middle of top and bottom deck boards with two way entry, the four-way stringer pallets allows easy access through all four sides. The 4 way stringer pallets are further divided into those with block designs and those with notched stringers. The difference between the two is that while the notched stringer pallets provides 4 way entry only for the forklifts, and 3 way entry for the pallet jacks, the block design pallets give a comfortable 4 way entry for both the pallet jacks and forklifts.

3.Double-Face Pallet

The pallets that are made with decks on both top and bottom surfaces are called double face pallets. They have their bottom deck that multiplies the pallet’s strength evenly distributing the load’s weight.

The double-face pallets are further configured to be into,

-          reversible &

-          non-reversible types

The reversible pallets can have items stacked on their both sides, whereas the non-reversible pallets can only have items on one surface.

4. Solid Deck Pallet

The solid deck pallets are sought after by many for their unique configuration with a single  large sheet of wood with absolute no space between them. Aesthetically appealing, they are best when it comes to transporting and cleaning.

5. Presswood Pallets

Presswood or engineered wood, this sort of pallet is made out of wood fibres which gets processed at a really high temperature to make a single solid block. They look neat and are  lightweight, providing added strength. They are also easy to handle. The only disadvantage of this sort of pallets is that they are vulnerable to water damage and is not so sturdy unlike the traditional wood counterparts.

6. Plywood Pallets

The plywood pallets are great when it comes to transporting very light to medium weight goods. Though they are light, they survive rough usage. Since the plywood is highly resistant to moisture, they are prone to bug infestations. If not maintained diligently, the plywood pallets can easily degrade over time.

7. Metal Pallets

This sort of pallets are much stronger than the wooden pallets. The best part of the metal pallet is that they can be used over and over again multiple times. They do not get infested by pests, or degrade over time even when left indoors. The best part is they can be housed even in outdoors and if needed be sanitized. The only drawback of the metal pallets is that they gets repaired soon.

8. Plastic Pallets

The plastic pallets are super safe, stable and a versatile option when it comes to transporting items. They are extremely lightweight and show resistance to chemical corrosion, humidity, ,shock and stress. Ideally they come a long way, nearly to over ten years. They don’t normally experience chipping, and are easy to handle.

9. Corrugated Board Pallets

The corrugated boadd pallets are configured to be the lightweight pallet of all and can bear up to 750 kilograms of weight. The best part of theirs is that they are recyclable and customizable and support greater outdoor use.

10. Double wing pallets

This type of pallets are configured with their top and the bottom deck extending beyond the stringers for additional area.
